  • Leonardo Affiliates Are Our Future
  • Jeffrey N. Babcock, Executive Director

Leonardo is heading toward the organization's 50th anniversary as the originator and still premier publisher of scholarly research and creative work at the intersection of the arts, sciences and technology. What began in the mid-1960s as a conversation among a group of distinguished scientists and artists is still evolving. Today's large, diverse and rapidly growing field of ArtScience is much more than a publication. The global network includes prestigious academic programs; research centers, labs and institutes; and a large number of workshops, conferences and other events that are moving beyond the boundaries of academia to K-12. The number of organizations dedicated to Leonardo's interest in the arts, sciences and technology continues to grow as the field gains interest and advocates from academics, industry and governments. As much activity as there is today, we are still near the beginning of an era of greater and more rapid growth.

Leonardo's leadership as the publisher of record for the ArtScience field remains a primary organizational commitment. We are actively engaged in and pursuing partnerships that focus on the future of ArtScience publishing and exploring new and experimental digital platforms that enable collaborative research, rapid review and publication of research, advanced media and interactive technologies, and emerging models that enhance multi-platform distribution.

Leonardo will announce new partnerships as soon as they are in place.

Expanded Participation for Leonardo Affiliates

These and other initiatives are the first in an expanded scope of activities that Leonardo is pursuing in partnership with our Affiliates, a key element in our forward-looking strategy.

Our decision to invite Affiliates to become active partners is a significant and meaningful development that positively impacts our relationship with our Affiliate community, opens new opportunities for Affiliates to connect and collaborate with their peers, and offers institutional Affiliates and their faculty and students opportunities to gain visibility, recognition and other value from Leonardo relationships and experiences. In addition to institutional and corporate members, we are also adding a new Individual Associate category.

As Leonardo's most active and supportive organizations, Affiliates are invited to serve as members of a new Affiliate Leadership Council, which collaborates with Leonardo's staff and governing board to explore opportunities, shape Affiliate plans and policies and host Leonardo/Affiliate meetings and events.

Affiliates are the first to learn about, partner with and participate in Leonardo project opportunities that benefit and increase the visibility of their faculty, students and institutions and provide connections with peers.

In 2012, Leonardo will create a new Affiliate website to showcase Affiliate research, projects, faculty, students and more.
