Abstract

In Brazil, from 1932 to 1945, Heitor Villa-Lobos participated in the authoritarian regime of Getúlio Vargas as music educator and what could be construed as an indoctrinator of the regime’s ideologies. Villa-Lobos implemented a program of music education in schools that sought to promote discipline among children while socializing them and educating them about aspects of the ethnic and socio-cultural formation of Brazilian people. Although Villa-Lobos had sketched his program of music education with ostensibly purely educational intentions, Vargas appropriated Villa-Lobos’s program and used it as a tool to homogenize the government’s nationalistic ideologies among children. This article demonstrates that, despite Villa-Lobos’s original educational intentions, he increasingly aligned his program with the government’s nationalistic ideologies and consciously instilled these ideologies in the minds of children, becoming, in essence, an indoctrinator of the regime.

Abstract

No Brasil, de 1932 a 1945, Heitor Villa-Lobos participou do regime autoritário de Getúlio Vargas como educador e aquilo que podemos interpretar como um doutrinador da ideologia desse regime. Villa-Lobos implementou um programa de educação musical nas escolas visando promover disciplina entre as crianças, bem como socializá-las e educá-las sobre aspectos da formação étnica e sociocultural do povo brasileiro. Apesar de Villa-Lobos ter elaborado as principais ideias do seu programa com propósitos puramente educacionais, Vargas se apropriou desse programa e o usou para homogeneizar sua ideologia nacionalista entre as crianças. Esse artigo demonstra que, apesar das intenções originais de Villa-Lobos terem sido educacionais, ele gradualmente alinhou seu programa com a ideologia de Vargas, e conscientemente a inculcou na mente das crianças, tornando-se, essencialmente, um doutrinador do regime.
