The chief theme of Bagolini's analysis is the attempt to promote useful "dialogue" or communication by avoiding the extremes of positivism, historicism, and formalism in the interpretation of politics, political theory, law, and personal responsibility. The criticisms of Kelsen, Croce, Sartre, Popper, Levi-Strauss, Hart, Christensen, and Ferreira Da Silva are especially noteworthy. --H. W. S. Pp. 158. $5) In the sixth Oberlin Colloquium in Philosophy Nowell-Smith criticizes Austin's notion of illocutionary acts, Nakhnildan shows that four formulations of the ontological arguments contain false premises, Putnam discusses the question whether pain is a brain state or a functional state (with comments by Aune and Place), Cavell wonders why fraudulence is such a significant question in modern art (he is answered rather crisply by Margolis and Beardsley), and Ninian Smart argues that all descriptions of mystical experience invoke theological concepts (rejoinders by Nelson Pike and Paul Sclimidt). In short, the book is a mixed bag like the accidental collocation of pieces in a journal issue, but at a higher price and without the fringe benefits of book notes and publishers' advertisements. --A.
