The events of September 11 and their aftermath have focused new attention on the state of the American health care system and its role in homeland defense. In this symposium, a panel of historians reflect on the unprecedented events of September 11 and attempt to put them into broader historical context. From three different vantage points—the history of bioterrorism, disaster response, and environmental hazard—they suggest the need to resist overly simplistic conceptions of notions of security, risk, and heroism.
