Abstract

Collaborative Dubliners: Joyce in Dialogue presents paired readings of each Dubliners story. This unique project, undertaken by editor Vicki Mahaffey and featuring a wide range of Joycean scholars, seeks “to produce a new way of doing literary criticism based on dialogue, interplay, and an explicit acknowledgment of a range of possible ways of ‘framing’ interpretations” and considers the stories themselves as “parabolic narratives” (2). This notice considers the pedagogical usefulness of this method and how its dialogic centrality offers to expand our understanding of the stories individually and the collection overall, while reminding us that every reading is a dialogue between the reader and text.
