As the editors of The Journal of Korean Studies, we are pleased to present our first thematic issue, something which we plan to do annually in addition to our regular issue. Guest edited by JungBong Choi of New York University, our current issue, “Unsettling the National in Korean Cinema” is, we hope, quite timely given the increasing interest and influence of Korean media.

The six articles in this issue all contest, in one way or another, the nation as the most appropriate unit of analysis for understanding Korean cinema—whether by noting the international activities of director Chung Chang Wha, the cosmopolitan character of pyŏnsa, or the transnational aspects of Im Kwŏn-Taek’s minjok cinema.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to our book review editor, Dr. Chiho Sawada, for his continued support of The Journal of Korean Studies. Dr. Sawada has served as book review editor for the past three years providing a full range of book reviews from numerous subjects related to Korea. Dr. Sawada is stepping down from his post as book review editor after spring 2012 and has agreed to continue to serve as an editorial board member. We are deeply grateful for his support.
