Charitable bequests after death were popular among Jews of Christian Spain. Wealthy Jews preferred to establish private charitable foundations—the hekdesh trusts, which show traces of both Christian and Islamic influence—to make such donations. Jewish religious traditions said that those who gave to charity would benefit in afterlife.
