  • Markets and Famines in Pre-Industrial Europe
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Famines -- Europe -- History.
    • Grain -- Europe -- Marketing -- History.
    • Grain -- Prices -- Law and legislation -- Europe -- History.
    Abstract:
How markets perform during famines has long been a contentious issue. Recent research tends to associate famine with market segmentation and hoarding. Evidence based on an analysis of the spatial and temporal patterns of food-price movements during four famines in pre-industrial Europe indicates that markets functioned "normally" in times of crisis.

  • Homicide in Los Angeles, 1827-2002
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Homicide -- California -- Los Angeles -- History.
    • Violence -- Social aspects -- California -- Los Angeles -- History.
    Abstract:
An analysis of nearly two centuries of homicide data that stretch back to the Mexican period for the city and county of Los Angeles reveal a long history of violence in the region, one in which the homicide rate has consistently been higher than that of other major cities.  Such factors as national culture, regional differences, demographics, economics, and political structure help to account for the persistence of this pattern. Does this traditional tolerance for violence and homicide in Los Angeles signify a local articulation of what is deemed normal, and could long-term efforts be devised to counter it?

  • Social Capital Formation in Australian Rural Communities: The Role of the Stock and Station Agent
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Animal industry -- Australia -- History.
    • Wool industry -- Australia -- History.
    • Stockyards -- Economic aspects -- Australia -- History.
    Abstract:
Data from the Australian stock and station agent industry can be used to examine several unresolved issues concerning how to characterize and measure social capital. The evidence reveals two distinct types of social capital—one long-term and innate to a community and the other more volatile, subject to individual decisions. The two types are causally linked, the inherent strain providing propitious conditions for particular kinds of investment. Social-capital investment is measured through the proxy of goodwill as revealed in takeover analyses.

  • Propensity-Score Methods and the Lenin School
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Communist leadership -- Study and teaching -- Soviet Union -- History -- 1917-1936.
    • Voenno-politicheskaia akademiia imeni V.I. Lenina -- Curricula.
    • British -- Soviet Union -- History -- 1917-1936.
    • Communist parties -- Great Britain -- History -- 20th century.
    Abstract:
Although social scientists often use propensity-score methods to study databases that contain substantial amounts of bias and missing information, these techniques have not been applied in the historical literature. This article uses propensity-score matching to investigate the impact of Moscow training on the selection of leadership cadres within Britain's Communist Party. These matching techniques can enable the quantitative analysis of a range of previously under-utilized historical data.

  • The Swedenborgian Search for African Purity
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Coleman, Deirdre. Romantic colonization and British anti-slavery.
    • Great Britain -- Colonies -- Administration -- History -- 18th century.
    Abstract:
Emanuel Swedenborg, an engineer and mystic of the Enlightenment, prophesied that mankind's spiritual perfection was to be found deep in the heart of Africa. That idea unleashed a flurry of scientific and geographical inquiry among his disciples and other Swedes that has long been neglected. In addition to stimulating an era of romantic colonization in Africa, some of the activity and enthusiasm of the Swedenborgians contributed significantly to the abolitionist agitation that eventually ended the slave trade.
