  • Health and Nutrition in Pre-Columbian America: The Skeletal Evidence
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Human remains (Archaeology) -- America.
    • Indians -- Health and hygiene -- History.
    Abstract:
A millennial perspective on health is best obtained from skeletal remains, which depict not only childhood morbidity conditions but also processes of degeneration that accompany aging and strenuous physical effort. Compiled into an index of health, data from twenty-three localities collected as part of a large collaborative project on the Western Hemisphere reveal diverse health conditions and a long-term decline that was associated with movement into less healthy ecological environments. The results have implications for understanding environmental determinants of health, the pattern of European conquest, pre-contact population size, human adaptation to climate change, and discovering prime movers of very long-term economic growth.

  • The Political Economy of Famine Relief in China, 1740-1820
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Food relief -- China -- History -- 18th century.
    • Food relief -- China -- History -- 19th century.
    • China -- Economic conditions -- 1644-1912.
    Abstract:
Pre-industrial economies often faced unpredictable and catastrophic risks from crop failures caused by erratic weather patterns, pests, and epidemics. In China, tax exemptions/postponements, as well as local state-sponsored granaries, were used to forestall and curtail the impact of food crises. Relatively little is known about the evolution of these two relief measures throughout China's provinces. A simple model separating resource constraints from agency problems reveals that the terms of famine-relief funding and the command/control structure of the state produced a rational incentive for various local agents to deviate from the objectives of the central authority in a similar way, thus producing the kinds of macroeconomic patterns of storage/relief observable from the data.

  • Onomastics and Its Uses

    • Hooke, Della, ed. Names, time and place: essays in memory of Richard McKinley.
    • Postles, David, ed.
    • Names, Personal -- Congresses.
    • Names, Personal -- England.
    Abstract:
Historians have been slow to embrace the field of onomastics, finding it too technical, too specialized, and not readily applicable to typical questions and avenues of inquiry. But two recent works that span the ages from prehistoric times through the early medieval period and into the nineteenth century use names and naming to detect patterns of migration, mobility, marriage, social identity, and demographic assimilation. In most studies, names function primarily as labels, rarely as causative agents or clues to deeper social or cultural realities. But names can also help to trace people across space and time and demonstrate the significance of relationships within and between classes and families.

  • A Reintroduction to Political Economy: History, Institutions, and Power
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Lindert, Peter H. Growing public: social spending and economic growth since the eighteenth century.
    • Government spending policy -- History -- Case studies.
    Abstract:
A key question in the study of political economy is whether social spending by governments negatively affects economic growth. Recent work exemplifying a broad turn toward interdisciplinary social science strongly suggests that it does not. Scholars interested in such issues, as well as others at the intersection of "state" and "market," have much to gain from attending to the overlapping histories of law, institutions, policymaking, business, and economic development.
