  • The Rise of the Left and Working-Class Voting Behavior in New Zealand: New Methods
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Voting research -- New Zealand -- History -- 20th century -- Mathematical models.
    • Working class -- New Zealand -- Political activity -- History -- 20th century -- Mathematical models.
    Abstract:
The extent to which mainstream left-wing parties attracted working-class votes during the first half of the twentieth century is exceptionally difficult to establish and explain. All of the various methods applied to the subject, including ecological regression of aggregate data, have had their problems, especially the ecological fallacy. A novel solution to these problems, in the context of New Zealand, takes occupational and party voting data at street level as its observations for ten towns from 1911 to 1951, and correlates the data treating each town for each year as a case. The working-class component in the total vote for the Labour Party varied surprisingly by town and followed unexpected trends.

  • Italy Revisited: The Encyclopedia
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Kleinhenz, Christopher, ed. Medieval Italy: an encyclopedia.
    • Italy -- Civilization -- 476-1268 -- Encyclopedias.
    Abstract:
The proliferation of encyclopedias and dictionaries in every field raises questions concerning the scholarly purpose and economics of these enterprises: Who stands to benefit from them most, and who can afford them? A new encyclopedia of medieval Italy distills for the current moment the latest canonical judgment of editors and authors about which subjects merit scrutiny and how much weight they should receive in a reference work intended to be consulted rather than read from cover to cover. The process of interdisciplinary collaboration results in a collective portrait of medieval Italy containing some surprises, only a few of which are pleasant.

  • Toward Deciphering the Khipu

    Subject Headings:
    • Urton, Gary, 1946- Signs of the Inka Khipu: binary coding in the Andean knotted-string records.
    • Quipu.
    Abstract:
Gary Urton argues that the khipu employed a seven-bit system of binary coding based upon seven inherently binary characteristics. In most cases, he provides little if any ethnographic or historical evidence for the significance of individual binary features, and his justification for the larger binary code as following from Andean concepts of dualism is theoretically unfounded. Furthermore, the theory of binary coding suffers from numerous logical inconsistencies and contradictions.

  • Material Culture and Cultural History
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Material culture -- England.
    • England -- Civilization -- 18th century.
    • Civilization -- Philosophy.
    Abstract:
Whereas literary and cultural historians are interested in how early modern English culture was represented and perceived, historians of material culture are concerned with how it functioned and was experienced. Much can be learned from the study of the physical artifacts and goods described in inventories; only hard evidence can challenge and constrain economic and cultural determinism. The empirical evidence, however, has its own limitations, and only cultural theory can interpret the symbolic meaning of things. The effectiveness of each method increases when both are combined.

  • A Hobbesian Approach to Political-Economic History

    Subject Headings:
    • Teichova, Alice, ed. Nation, state, and the economy in history.
    • Matis, Herbert, ed.
    • Nationalism -- Economic aspects.
    Abstract:
Hobbesian theory provides a key to understanding the interaction of economics and politics in the history of many countries, revealing that the suppression of violence is the first task of any nascent state. Only after governments have assured lasting internal peace by monopolizing violence can economic growth and political stability reinforce each other.
