  • Social-Capital Formation and American Fraternal Association: New Empirical Evidence
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Knights of Pythias.
    • Friendly societies -- New York (State) -- Buffalo -- History -- 19th century.
    Abstract:
Rare membership and lodge data from a late nineteenth-century American fraternal order provide support for the existence of "bridging ties" among its members along class and neighborhood lines, though not across racial or gender lines. Lodge-related political activity centered on issues of exclusivity, such as the desirability of non-English speaking members. The order's system of government was more top-heavy and hierarchical than democratic; decisionmaking power resided with established members at the organization's national level. Overall, the data paint a picture of an American fraternal lodge unlike that represented in the contemporary literature about social-capital formation in the Golden Age of Fraternity.

    • Kalamazoo County (Mich.) -- Economic conditions -- 19th century.
    Abstract:
Individuals held almost all of the rural mortgages in nineteenth-century Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The women among their ranks were responsible for one of every six loans in the study's townships. Most women lenders, some of whom were socially prominent, lived within the County's limits; they varied considerably in age and marital status. Their role as sources of rural credit, however, is valuable evidence of women's early financial activity.

  • Magnifying Voters' Preferences: Bias in Elections to Birmingham's City Council
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Birmingham (England). City Council -- Elections -- History -- 20th century.
    • Birmingham (England) -- Politics and government -- 20th century.
    Abstract:
Results of Birmingham's city-council elections throughout a ninety-year period show that electoral bias had a significant impact on the success of particular parties during different phases of party-system development. Although the electoral system tends to favor large parties, its bias toward Labor since World War II has been extraordinary. At times, it was the crucial factor in determining control of the city's administration.

    Abstract:
Since the seminal study of English witchcraft c. 1970, such developments as England's entry into the European Community and the revival of witchhunting episodes in postcolonial Africa have blurred parts of the picture. Recent publications present an opportunity to make revisions to the classic view of British witchcraft, setting the subject within its proper European context while pointing out some of its distinctive features.
