  • Fates of Orphans: Poor Children in Antebellum Charleston
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Orphans -- South Carolina -- Charleston -- History -- 1775-1865.
    • Charleston Orphan House.
    Abstract:
The circumstances of children upon leaving the Charleston Orphan House were strongly influenced by their circumstances upon arriving. Most of these children were bound out as apprentices after a few years; a large, and growing, minority of them returned to their families; and others died or ran away from the institution. Those with widowed mothers who maintained close ties with them--as evidenced by the children's literacy--were most likely to resume family life after their mothers remarried. Those who had been delivered to the orphanage by other family members or by public officials tended not to be so fortunate.

  • Family Composition and Remarriage in Alsace, 1750-1850

    Subject Headings:
    • Family -- France -- Alsace -- History.
    • Remarriage -- France -- Alsace -- History.
    Abstract:
Data from a family reconstitution study of five villages in Alsace, France, point to the importance of family composition as a determinant of remarriage. For widows and widowers, the likelihood of remarriage increased with the number of children fourteen years of age or younger in their household, though the result was statistically significant only for men. Moreover, having an older daughter (fifteen to twenty-one years of age) was associated with a much lower likelihood of remarriage for widowers, and, surprisingly, for widows as well.

  • How Italian was the Renaissance?
[Access article in HTML] [Access article in PDF]
    Subject Headings:
    • Borchert, Till. Age of Van Eyck: the Mediterranean world and early Netherlandish painting 1430-1530.
    • Painting, Flemish -- 15th century -- Exhibitions.
    Abstract:
The traditional account of the Renaissance holds that intellectual and artistic influence moved overwhelmingly in one direction--from Italy to the rest of Europe, and especially toward the North. A remarkable exhibition in Bruges, however, has made the case that traffic did not go just one way, at least so far as innovation in painting was concerned, because the vibrant cultural center of the Low Countries had a powerful and significant impact on southern Europe. That this case is made through art is an indication of how important it is to bring different disciplines to bear on our understanding of the past.

    • Africa -- Historiography.
    Abstract:
The modern historiography of Africa has been so accelerated that many of its earliest practitioners still ply their trade. The fact that these pioneering scholars have changed their minds and practices considerably over time, often without any discussion of their reasons for doing so, suggests, among other things, that the evaluation of their contributions to the field cannot take place on a small scale; it must take into account their entire corpora, both substantively and methodologically.

    • Political leadership.
    Abstract:
The twentieth century saw its share of autocrats and tyrants. The question of how to understand each group, as well as the differences between them, is certainly a fit subject for the interdisciplinary study of history. Hard evidence from psychology and biology stand ready to make a valuable contribution to it. Yet, at this juncture, political and sociological explanations for the bizarre behavior of ruthless leaders have more to offer than taxonomical imperatives derived from anecdotal data about personality traits of rulers and sociobiological speculations based on the impulses of dominant male primates.
