Since the colonial period, higher education in eastern and southern Africa has been narrow and utilitarian, contributing to both unemployment and the skills shortage. The article explores older, more comprehensive indigenous models of higher education in Africa and cautions against allowing narrow economic and political concerns to dictate educational policy.
