This article describes the effective system that resulted from revising Guilford College’s general education curriculum. The system consists of the following steps: naming and operationalizing clear academic principles, establishing detailed sets of criteria for general education categories, screening course proposals rigorously, assessing courses in light of the criteria, and creating an effective feedback loop.
