  • The Effect of Personality and Precollege Characteristics on First-Year Activities and Academic Performance

    Abstract:
      The relationship between students' gender, personality traits, predicted first-year grades, and quality of effort put forth in academic and personal/social activities with academic achievement and critical thinking was examined for 265 first-year science and engineering undergraduates enrolled at a selective doctoral-extensive university. Results show that some personality traits influence the quality of effort expended with academic and personal/social activities as well as end-of-first-year grades and a measure of critical thinking.

  • Student Burnout as a Function of Personality, Social Support, and Workload

    Abstract:
      Measures of social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support), personality (General Temperament Survey), and workload were related to psychological burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory) among 149 college students (M = 20.8 yrs.). High levels of burnout were predicted by negative temperament and subjective workload, but actual workload (academic and vocational) had little to do with burnout. Low levels of burnout were predicted by positive temperament, participation in extracurricular activities, and social support, especially from friends.

  • African American Student Organizations As Agents of Social Integration

    Abstract:
      In this qualitative study, 88 African American undergraduates were interviewed to understand the role of African American student organizations in facilitating social integration at a predominantly White institution. The conditions under which participation in these organizations aided students' social integration are presented. Results largely support Tinto's (1993) theory of student departure but indicate limitations of the theory when applying it to African Americans from predominantly White home communities.

  • Diversity Experiences and College Student Learning and Personal Development

    Abstract:
      Using responses to The College Student Experience Questionnaire (CSEQ) from 53,756 undergraduates at 124 American four-year colleges and universities, this study examines the effects of interactional diversity experiences on a range of desirable outcomes for White students and students of color in different types of higher education institutions. Though White students had less contact with students from different backgrounds, such experiences positively affected the self-reported gains for both Whites and students of color at all types of colleges. These effects differed in magnitude, however, for White students and students of color, depending on the respective outcome measure and institutional type.

  • Different by Design: An Examination of Student Outcomes Among Participants in Three Types of Living-Learning Programs

    Abstract:
      This study examines college environments and outcomes among students in three different types of living-learning programs compared with a control sample at one university. Results reveal that living-learning students exhibit higher levels of engagement in college activities with stronger academic outcomes, and experiences that varied by program type.

    Abstract:
      Research involving 6,782 undergraduates (50% first-year students, 50% seniors, 16% fraternity/sorority members, and 58% females) at 15 AAU public research universities revealed that Greek affiliation had a weak positive relationship with engagement and gains in learning. The effects for Greek affiliation were stronger for seniors than first-year students.

      Using an ecology model of human development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979, 1993), I frame the exploration of racial identities of 38 college students with multiple racial heritages. I map the influence of interactions within and between specific environments on students' decisions to identify in one or more of five patterns of mixed race identity found in a previous study.

    Abstract:
      Students with learning disabilities are attending college at an increasing rate. Still, little is known about the phenomenon of experiencing a learning disability in postsecondary education. Through grounded theory methodology, this study explored the experiences of 9 college students with learning disabilities. The emergent theory points to elements of "self-style" as a means to operationally define learning disability.

    Abstract:
      Cognitive and metacognitive strategies, often referred to as "study skills," are considered essential to being successful in college. Their importance is underscored by the fact that academic tasks at the college level tend to demand far more higher-level thinking and independent learning than those encountered in secondary school (Carson, Chase, Gibson, & Hargove, 1992). Instruction in these strategies is currently the subject of much interest and research in education. An example of a general approach to teaching learning strategies, labeled "learning-to-learn," has its basis in informational and generative models of learning, and its emphasis on self-regulated and strategic learning (Simpson, Hynd, Nist, & Burrell, 1997).
