  • "Rebirth of a Nation": Hurston in Haiti

    Subject Headings:
    • Hurston, Zora Neale. Tell my horse.
    • Hurston, Zora Neale -- Political and social views.
    • Hurston, Zora Neale -- Views on Haiti.
    Abstract:
Zora Neale Hurston's imperialistic political rhetoric in Tell My Horse seems incongruous with her previous cultural politics, but this work should be considered in relation to developments in Haitian ethnology. Where Hurston had previously believed that cultural populism could energize a democracy, her commitment to folklore was here linked with an authoritarian and racially essentialist political ideology. Hurston responded by severing her cultural analysis from her political assessments, a process apparent also in her later political commentary.

  • Penetrating Types: Conflating Modernist and Postmodernist Tourism on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland

    • America -- Discovery and exploration -- Norse.
    Abstract:
This article explores the conflation of modernism and postmodernism at two tourist sites involving the representation of a Viking past in Newfoundland, Canada. The archaeologically based site at L'Anse aux Meadows is compared to the purpose-built tourist site of Norstead, and both are analysed in terms of the hybridity that occurs within each location. Rationalist versus aesthetic forms of authenticity are considered in relation to the construction of tourist experiences in the twenty-first century.

  • The Unbearable Weight of Authenticity: Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and a Theory of "Touristic Reading"

    Subject Headings:
    • Hurston, Zora Neale. Their eyes were watching God.
    • Literature and folklore -- United States.
    • Literature and society -- United States.
    • Culture and tourism.
    Abstract:
Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God is the focal point in this article for a discussion of "touristic reading," a process that occurs when a reader assumes a fictional text is an authentic and complete representation of its source culture. Although this can happen even when the ethnicity of the writer and reader match, the dynamic is often intensified when their ethnicities differ—that is, when readers read across ethnic (or other) boundaries. Folkloric content in fiction may make texts particularly vulnerable to such readings, but the presence of ethnographic material may also help undermine touristic readings, as evidenced by the resistant and subversive aspects of Hurston's text.
