Abstract

In this short article for the forum on Black Catholicism, I examine Afro-creole opposition to the New Orleans Archdiocese’s plan to create a Black “national” parish. The archdiocese’s decision to create St. Katherine’s parish and particularly the local protests to that decision draw attention to the ethnicizing capacity of religion. Furthermore, it illuminates how the tradition of Catholicism (not simply Protestantism) is significant to Black religious cultures.
