In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • Notes & Comments

The idea of the JJQ grew out of a modestly conceived notion to draw Joyceans together and to publish provocative essays dealing with Joyce’s life, work, and milieu.

We are looking for articles which reflect serious and responsible scholarship. Short notes are encouraged, and we also feel that highly specialized items are within our province.

Through the help of Alan Cohn and Richard Kain the JJQ will bring the secondary bibliography of Joyce up to date. This bibliography will begin to appear in the second issue. Should any readers have reprints or know of bibliographical entries please let me know.

Please feel free to comment on any aspect of the JJQ. Should you be at the MLA meeting, look me up if you have any questions or advice.

Several subscribers have written in about private collections of Joyce. Should any one have any buy or sell offers we will carry them at least every other issue.

The MLA conference of the American Committee for Irish Studies will be on the subject of “Research Opportunities in Ireland.” Those interested should contact Harold Orel, Department of English, University of Kansas. Members of Professor Orel’s panel include David R. Clark, University of Massachusetts; Richard M. Kain, University of Louisville; Richard Loftus, University of Illinois.

Graduate students working on a thesis or a dissertation might send on a card stating the title of their proposed work, the director and university affiliation. We will try to carry a “work in progress” section. This section will also cover books in progress.

Concerning pagination changes in U, Albert Erskine, the Executive Editor of Random House, writes: “We simply sent the new Bodley Head edition to the printer and checked doubtful points against the Odyssey Press edition.” We still need a text.

Those who are interested in submitting articles please incorporate all direct quotations from Joyce’s work into the body of the article and use the following abbreviations: SH, PORTRAIT, U, FW, and merely [End Page 23] give the page number. With Dubliners and Portrait specify whether you are using the Compass, Modern Library, or Portable edition. Give the edition in the first citation and put all other footnotes at the end of the page.

Good news from Clive Hart in Australia. A WAKE NEWSLITTER will be in print instead of stencil beginning in January. There will be six issues per year at $2. For those interested in FW this running commentary is essential. I might add that both Clive Hart and Fritz Senn, the editors, have been most helpful in seeing the JJQ off the presses. [End Page 24]
