Abstract

This essay contends that Joyce's two uses of the Anglicized Gaelic word "pishogue" (in Gaelic, piseog) in Ulysses are a mistake and that the correct term would have been the similar but distinct Gaelic word "piteog." In support of this claim, I examine the contexts in which the word occurs, other common or recorded uses of "pishogue," and the French translation of Ulysses, on which Joyce collaborated.
