Abstract

The recovery of important consignments of Joyce's papers since 2000 makes "Circe" the most comprehensively documented of Ulysses's eighteen episodes. This essay explores the prepublication archive to argue that the "Telemachiad" typescripts informed the episode's signature play with quoting from other parts of the novel. In so doing, it takes textual recurrence as a thematization of how Joyce wrote Ulysses to initiate a critical trajectory that is independent of and perhaps anterior to the workings of the mind and psychologistic metaphors.
