As this issue went to press, we received the sad news of the passing of Samuel Huntington, a valued member of the International Security editorial board for more than twenty years. Huntington had the remarkable ability to write books that became the fundamental point of departure for subsequent debates in many different fields, including The Soldier and the State, Political Order in Changing Societies, and The Clash of Civilizations. His work deeply influenced many of the contributors to these pages. We and the discipline of political science will miss him greatly. —The Editors
