After gaining independence in 1947, the Indian government embarked on a program of economic development, with indigenization as the prime objective. Electronics and computers were initially hobbled by new, restrictive policies. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the government eased these restrictions, allowing local companies to import parts and components. Hindustan Computers Limited, born during this period, released its first commercial system in 1978.
