Human Biology Gabriel Ward Lasker Prize 2012

A jury composed of Professor Evelyne Heyer (Editor-in-Chief of Human Biology), Dr. Pierre Darlu (CNRS, France), and Dr. Franz Manni (Executive Editor of Human Biology) has agreed that Dr. Carina M. Schlebusch (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa; Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden) and Dr. Himla Soodyall (University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa) are the recipients of the Human Biology Gabriel Ward Lasker Prize for 2012. This award is attributed to them as the authors of the best scientific article to appear in the 2012 volume of the journal:

Schlebusch, C. M., and H. Soodyall. 2012. Extensive population structure in San, Khoe, and mixed ancestry populations from Southern Africa revealed by 44 short 5-SNP haplotypes. Hum. Biol. 84:695–724.

According to the jury:

The authors demonstrate that a wise choice of a limited number of markers can allow high-resolution studies about the population structure of human groups. The informed analysis of few markers can coexist with full genome sequencing techniques as they yield equally accurate results. This is good news for many of us and for those laboratories that are located in developing countries.
