Construyendo al predicador criollo: una aproximación al Arte de sermones de fray Martín de Velasco

Este ensayo estudia la conexión entre el surgimiento de manuales de oratoria escritos en el mundo colonial y su particular interés por construir la figura del predicador criollo. Se analiza aquí el libro Arte de sermones para hacerlos y predicarlos (1677), escrito por el criollo neogranadino fray Martín de Velasco. Este texto me permite demostrar cómo en las últimas décadas del siglo XVII el grupo criollo está en proceso de crear la figura de un agente cultural inédito, el predicador criollo, a través de ciertas estrategias de negociación discursiva entre su lugar de enunciación y la autoridad peninsular. En mi lectura, destaco cómo el Arte de sermones permite observar la compleja construcción ideológica que enmarca y fundamenta el espacio epistemológico desde el cual surge el predicador criollo.This essay studies the connection between the rise of oratory manuals written in the colonial world and its particular interest in building the figure of the Creole preacher. I analyze here the book Arte de sermones para hacerlos y predicarlos (1677) written by the Creole author Fray Martin de Velasco. This text allows me to demonstrate how in the last decades of the seventeenth century, the Creole community is in the process of creating the figure of an unprecedented cultural agent (the Creole preacher) through the deployment of certain discursive strategies that focus on the intersection between the Creole locus of enunciation and peninsular authority. My reading of Velascós book shows the complex ideological paradigm that frames the distinctive epistemological space forged by the Creole community in order to create the figure of the Creole preacher.
