The passing of Gabriel García Márquez on April 17, 2014 was felt around the world. Most of us remember the first time that we visited his fictional Aracataca, Colombia, as armchair travelers with our eyes wide open and our sense of wonderment on full alert. García Márquez’s storytelling categorically validates the act of reading. In commemoration and in lieu of my column, I invited Colombian-born Hispanist, Consuelo Hernández, to pay homage to the life and work of García Márquez. Dr. Hernández, who teaches Latin American literature at American University, contributes her reflection below. I thank her for sharing it with Hispania’s readers.
