Tóibín explores Henry James's influence on his own writing, especially as it led to the writing of his own book, The Master. James's experiences and disappointments parallel the disappointments of all writers. Tóibín points out that his own method of merging the deeply personal with the imagined belongs to the main method by which all novelists work.
