On 15 June 1954, on its way west across the Atlantic, the Italian ship Francesco Morosini made a brief stop at Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Among the ship’s passengers were Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Mary Welsh Hemingway. The next day—June 16th—the Madeira newspaper O Diário de Notícias, published a front-page piece about the world-famous Hemingway. Signed “A.R.,” this piece is new to Hemingway bibliography.
