Abstract

Explores correspondence between Mary Hemingway and Gordon Lish, fiction editor of Esquire (1969–1976), about publication of the "Bimini" segment of Islands in the Stream in the October 1970 issue of the magazine. Reveals Mary's dissatisfaction with Esquire's treatment of her husband's work, and Lish's dashed hopes that a posthumous appearance by Hemingway would boost the magazine's diminishing sales and stature in the literary community.
