This essay explores the possibility of regarding Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms as evidence of Hemingway's dissatisfaction with cultural definitions of masculinity and femininity. Working with Cixous' definition of bisexuality, the paper reads Hemingway's novel as a nascent form of écriture feminine, writing that refuses a political hierarchy of gender experience.
