Abstract

This article attempts an analytical description of the process of "Full Return to Hebrew" in terms of an updated language planning taxonomy. The principles of a periodization of the process of Full Return to Hebrew are discussed, and a distinction between language planning and language proto-planning is proposed. This distinction enables us to include in the proposed periodization not only nationally authorized language planning decisions and activities, e.g., the declaration of the 8th Zionist Congress (1907) of Hebrew as the official language of the W.Z.O., but also language planning activities that lacked such authoritativeness, as e.g., the activities of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and his circle.
