Senses of Success and the Rise of the Blockbuster

Blockbuster has been a familiar and lasting category of popular American cinema for decades, though we know relatively little of its origins. This essay opens up the history of the settlement and dispersion of the term blockbuster by discussing some instances of its early cultural usage. In so doing, this essay argues for an account of the popular and industry-specific language used to describe film and media practices.
