Abstract

Reprint of an essay which originally appeared in International Photographer, July 1960. Cameraman Maurice Kains recalls how he entered the motion picture business in 1919 and later joined D.W. Griffith's company in Mamaroneck, New York. Kains describes the duties of a second, or assistant, cameraman, especially as they related to the physical requirements of studio cameras. A protégé of cameraman George William Hill, he also describes working with G.W. Bitzer and Hendrik Sartov, and discusses the rivalry between them.
