ELT 37:3 1994 Posing as riddle-buster, he riddles his own way through an apparently incomplete list of thirty-two Irish counties in Finnegans Wake 595.1017 . The final essay in the collection, Di Jin's Translating Ulysses, East and West," offers the insight of a translator, in this case one who is translating Ulysses into Chinese, into the peculiar problems of translating Joyce. In the course of his valuable essay, Di Jin discusses German, Danish, French, and Spanish translations to argue against reductive literal correctness and for approximation of the widest complex of implications available to readers of the original. It is bracing to note that the ever-prolific Joyce industry continues to produce works of high quality and influence. The two books reviewed here are evidence of this claim. Robert D.
