Richard E. Benvenuto 1938-1987 With sadness we report that Richard E. Benvenuto, 49, Professor of English at Michigan State University, died on 28 November at his home in Haslett after a short illness. He received his B.A. in 1961 from the University of Detroit where he was designated Woodrow Wilson Scholar, his M.A. in creative writing in 1962 from Hollins College, and his Ph.D. in 1968 from Ohio State University. He joined the Michigan State faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1968 and was promoted to Professor in 1981. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds in 1973-1974. Professor Benvenuto was a distinguished scholar of Victorian literature and author of two books—Emily Brontë (1982) and Amy Lowell (1985)—and numerous articles and poems. At the time of his death, he was working on an updated version of the Brontë book and was pursuing research on Oscar Wilde. His "The Revealing Structure of A Child in the Jago" was published posthumously in ELT, 31:2(1988). He was an enthusiastic folk musician who played trombone, piano, bass and fiddle in informal music groups in the Michigan State community.
