EigJiLBaiiuings Barbara Fisher "Places in-between" have always fascinated me and informed my work. Not being familiar with the word "ecotone" before the birth of this journal, I nevertheless feel as if I have been living in one for as long as I can remember. As has my artwork. To paraphrase the definition given in the first volume, "eco" = dwelling and "tone" = tension. Houses are one of many familiar iconic forms in my work. They have always represented The Self to me, and as such are placed in mysterious situations, with varying degrees of stability/instability. They sit on the edge, attempting to find balance in an unfamiliar landscape. Glowing rocks/eggs also sit precariously, and strange, long-legged creatures often appear. Simple botanical forms grow from all directions. The "meaning" of each piece is open to interpretation: Is this a gravity -free zone? Are the creatures friendly or menacing? Could the abyss into which the vases or houses or chairs are falling be a better world? Are these figures and plants and rocks communicating across the borders that seem to separate or strand them? Are they trying to get out or stay safe? I'm not sure. I just paint what I see. 44 Beneath the Surface My Soul to Take Night Vision Before I Wake A Home Away From Home IJ Silent Conversation Precarious Promise Holding the World Together ...
