Athens Conference on Ancient and Modern History

The Athens Institute for Education and Research will host the international conference, "History: From Ancient to Modern" in Athens, Greece, from December 28 to 31, 2007. There will be panel sessions on various aspects of ancient Greek and Roman history, as well as world history and historiography. The conference will also include tours of various historical sites. Columbia Center for the Ancient Mediterranean

Columbia University's Center for the Ancient Mediterranean will present a series of lectures this fall. Speakers include Henrik Mouritsen (October 5), Irad Malkin (October 12), Carol Lawton (November 9), and Kutalmis Gorkay (November 30).
The Center will host a conference on "Spaces of Justice in the Roman World" from November 16 to 17, 2007. This multi-disciplinary conference will "consider how much the physical environment of trials and lawsuits was determined by the way Romans thought about law." Speakers will include Jean-Jacques Aubert, Bruce Frier, David Johnston, Eugenio La Rocca, Richard Neudecker, Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, Katherine Welch, and Paul Zanker. Hawaii Conference on the Arts and Humanities

The Sixth Annual Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities will be held from January 11 to 14, 2008, in Honolulu, Hawaii. This multi-disciplinary conference is designed to promote dialogue and interaction among artists and scholars from all areas of the humanities. Topic areas addressed include language and literature, art and architecture, history, religion, and philosophy, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. Penn-Leiden Colloquium

The fifth Penn-Leiden Colloquium, "Valuing Others," will be held at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, from June 6 to 8, 2008. This colloquium will "explore the different values, with their different perspectives, that ancient society found useful in thinking about belonging together, social cohesion and unity." The relevance of ancient notions of "valuing others" for contemporary society will also be addressed.
