The major portion of this volume deals with Union losses, not necessarily because the author served with the 107th New York Volunteers. The printing is excellent in this version, which enhances its value as a reference book. The History of the Campaign of General T. J. (Stonewall) Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia from November 4, 1861 to June 17, 1862. By William Allen and Jed. Hotchkiss. (Morningside Bookshop, 1974. Original publication, 1880. Pp. 175. $15.00.) This reprinting contains the welcome addition of excellent fold-out maps. The Battle of Seven Pines. By Gustavus W. Smith. (Morningside Bookshop , 1974. Original publication, 1891. Pp. 202. $15.00) This is a detailed account by the man who succeeded Joe Johnston after the latter was wounded. The Passing of the Armies. By Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. (Morningside Bookshop, 1974. Original publication, 1915.) This excellent volume is notable for Chamberlain's literary ability. Particularly affecting is his account of Appomattox. As John J. Pullen comments in his short introduction, there is a "strong sense of other-worldliness" in Chamberlain's account, stemming perhaps from his severe wounds. Confederate Military History. Taylor, who served as Adjutant-General of the Armv of Northern Vireinia. wrote with skill and affection for his commander. This particular volume contains many interesting and insightful comments and observations on campaigns , battles, and personalities.
