His previous books include Inside War: The Guerrilla Conflict in Missouri during theAmerican Civil War (1989) and Citizen Sherman (1995). His essay in this issue is adapted from The Making ofRobert E. Lee (forthcoming). Manisha Sinha is assistant professor ofAfro-American studies and history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
