Charles R. Acland is Professor and Research Chair in Communication Studies at Concordia University, Montreal. His books include Screen Traffic: Movies, Multiplexes, and Global Culture (Duke University Press, 2003) and Swift Viewing: The Popular Life of Subliminal Influence (Duke University Press, 2012). He is editor, with Haidee Wasson, of Useful Cinema (Duke University Press, 2011). Acland is also editor, with Catherine Russell, of the Canadian Journal of Film Studies.

Erkki Huhtamo is Professor of Design and Media Arts at the University of California-Los Angeles. His most recent book, edited with Jussi Parikka, is Media Archaeology: Approaches, Applications, and Implications (University of California Press, 2011). His next book is a large monograph, Illusions in Motion: A Media Archaeology of the Moving Panorama and Related Spectacles (MIT Press, forthcoming 2012).

Tess Takahashi is Assistant Professor in the Department of Film at York University in Toronto. She is currently revising her dissertation, "Impure Film: Medium Specificity and Documentary Reference in the North American Avant-Garde, 1968-2008," for publication as a book. She is part of the editorial collective of Camera Obscura.

Julie Turnock is Assistant Professor of Media and Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Plastic Reality: Special Effects, Art and Technology in 1970s US Filmmaking (forthcoming). She has published on special effects in the sixth edition of Popping Culture (Pearson, 2010) and in the New Review of Film and Television Studies.

Haidee Wasson is Associate Professor of Cinema Studies at Concordia University, Montreal. She is author of Museum Movies: The Museum of Modern Art and the Birth of Art Cinema (University of California Press, 2005) and coeditor with Lee Grieveson of Inventing Film Studies (Duke University Press, 2008). She is also editor, with Charles Acland, of Useful Cinema (Duke University Press, 2011). She is currently writing a history of portable film technologies.
