Since its zenith in the mid-twentieth century, the family story has largely disappeared from critical discussion, partly because it has been treated as merely a form of realism. Elizabeth Enright’s Melendy books show that family stories are both more formulaic and more interesting aesthetically than a purely realist reading allows.
