A chance remark in the memoirs of a late friend leads to the discovery of Byron’s former lodgings, the existence of a lost plaque to the poet, and continuing rumours of his relationship with his half-sister Augusta Leigh. Corroboration of the story is found in pre-war documentation and finally resolved in the abysm of war.
