Abstract

This essay details the known history of a rediscovered Byron forgery by the self-styled Major George Gordon De Luna Byron. The forgery, contained in a volume of Shenstone's works, contains a four-line poem, a short note on the name of Shenstone's property in Worcestershire and a longer prose note on Shenstone and his work. The essay gives, for the first time, the full text of the forgery, along with that of a poem written in the same volume by Violet Fane, later published as 'Written in a Volume of "The Works of Shenstone", Which had belonged to Lord Byron when a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in which the Poet had inscribed some laudatory remarks concerning the Author'.
