After 14 years as Editor of the Bulletin, Gert Brieger is stepping down: as of this issue, he appears on the masthead as Editor Emeritus.

Gert's province as Editor has been "the history of medicine since 1800"—a vast territory that he has covered with grace and expertise. He has called on friends, acquaintances, and colleagues around the world to assess books and manuscripts for the journal, and his own knowledge of the historiography of fields ranging from bioethics to the history of surgery to medical education has been one of the Bulletin's important strengths.

Gert is one of the few generalists in the history of medicine, and it would be difficult to find one individual to fill his place. For this reason, we are "replacing" him with 12 people: the editors will be involving the members of the Bulletin's Advisory Editorial Board in the day-to-day business of the journal, and will ask them for advice in evaluating manuscripts and suggesting reviewers.

Gert has promised to sit in on the journal's weekly editorial meetings when he is in town, and we hope to continue to turn to him for consultation and guidance. He retires with the deep thanks of the Association, the Press, and most of all, the remaining Editors.
