In this essay, the author uses photographs as a way into her quiet father's early life in Europe before the Holocaust. When her great aunt dies, a box full of letters written by members of the extended family in the Warsaw Ghetto and America, is opened. The author arranges for their translation. The revelations are painful, yet bring her closer to the family that was lost to her father and to her.
