Editor's Note

I write this having just returned from the Autobiography and Changing Identities conference, held at the University of British Columbia in late July. The Winter 2001 Biography will be a special issue devoted to this conference. Co-edited by Susanna Egan and Gabriele Helms, the conference directors, this issue will I think prove to be an interesting and useful overview of the current state of autobiography studies--the work under way, the questions posed, the critical, theoretical, ethical, and political debates.

This conference also made possible further planning of events and activities for the International Autobiography and Biography Association--IABA, or as I learned some people pronounce it, "Yabba." Zhao Baisheng of Beijing University has kindly offered to establish a website that will link various centers, publications, and research resources of interest to the international life writing community. The site will be interdisciplinary and multilingual.

In related Center for Biographical Research news, thanks to Lanning Lee, our new online coordinator, the CBR/Biography website is being updated and expanded. The address, and a detailed listing of the research and information resources the website provides, appears later in this issue. Please take a look at our virtual center at www.hawaii.edu/biograph.

You will also find in this issue information about eligibility and deadlines for the inaugural International Life Writing Prize. The winning author will receive $1,000, and the essay will be published in Biography. Please consider submitting an essay, and pass the word on to colleagues and students. An electronic version of the notice is posted on the CBR website.
