Submission Guideslines

The Asian Bioethics Review covers a broad range of topics relating to bioethics. An online academic journal, ABR provides a forum to express and exchange original ideas on all aspects of bioethics, especially those relevant to the region. The journal promotes multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary studies and will appeal to all working in the field of ethics in medicine and healthcare, genetics, law, policy, science studies and research. The subject of articles and research findings submitted for publication can be international or domestically oriented, and comparative approaches are encouraged. Submissions should be made via email to medcampb@nus.edu.sg or can be submitted online at www.asianbioethicsreview.com. Registration on the website as “Author” is required for online submissions.

In addition to articles, research findings, book reviews and letters to the Editor, ABR will publish short pieces of original work as Columns (Case Corner including Commentaries, Insights, MedLaw, Updates and Student Voices); provide a section for comments or responses to articles, as and when they are received and deemed relevant for publication; and provide podcasts and videos on a range of bioethical issues available for downloading. Because ABR has a close collaboration and working relationship with the Hastings Center Report, ABR will publish some articles and features simultaneously with the Hastings Center Report.

ABR recognises the wealth of artistic as well as scholarly talent within our region. As a result, we invite artists to submit original work, suitable for the journal’s cover. For further information, please see our website: www.asianbioethicsreview.com.

Information for Contributors:
Manuscripts for articles and research findings should be of 5,000 words excluding references, although longer manuscripts may be accepted in this category. The word count excludes the title page, abstract, tables, acknowledgements and contributions. This is the main category for original research papers on all relevant topics. An abstract of up to 250 words shall accompany each submitted manuscript. Authors should provide 3–4 lines or 75 words of biographical detail to be included with publication.

All articles and research findings will be subject to ABR’s peer review system. This is a blind review process; for more information on our peer review policy and review criteria, visit our website: www.asianbioethicsreview.com.

All manuscripts accepted for publication will be subject to ABR’s licence policy, which can be viewed at our website.

Columns: Work submitted in this category should be original and does not require detailed, academic research. The word count for all columns is approximately 2,000 words. Authors should provide 3–4 lines or 75 words of biographical detail to be included with publication. Submissions of original work for columns will be internally reviewed.

Case Corner and Commentaries: A relevant, research or clinical case study submitted for comment and discussion in the Case Corner. The case study should identify an ethical dilemma or problem for comment by professionals. The case should be completely anonymised to avoid recognition.

MedLaw: This column encompasses recent developments in medical law, be it discussions of recent legislation, review or committee debates on legislation, recent case reports and case law, each followed by analytical interpretation or articles on relevant medical law topics.

Insights: This column is dedicated to work in bioethics that is new and relevant and will be of interest to those working in the field. It can cover a number of disciplines, for example, the Arts; or emerging topic areas, for example, teaching or examining in bioethics. ABR would like to encourage and develop work within the field that reflects new approaches to a topic or a multi-disciplinary approach offering new insights.

Updates: This column keeps readers informed of developments in areas that have been under discussion in a country or on a topic that is of importance in the field of bioethics.

Student Voices: This column is available for students in any relevant subject to write about ethics or their interaction with ethics. The tone is not expected to be formal; the piece does not require research and students should feel free to write in their own style. Student Voices is designed to give students an opportunity to write for an academic journal.

Book Reviews: Reviews of recently published books in the areas of bioethics, law and/or policy should be submitted within six months of agreeing the review. Each review will be up to 2,000 words, and reviewers should provide 75 words of biographical detail to be included with publication.

Please submit all material in Times New Roman, 12 point, double spaced. Headings can be used. ABR utilises a modified version of APA referencing system, using Endnotes that are referenced sequentially and appear at the end of the article in the numerical order in which they appear in the text.

For all other information, including licensing provisions, please refer to our website: www.asianbioethicsreview.com.
