Isaac Albéniz (1860–1909), a well-known composer of contemporary Spanish music, created the opera Merlin between 1898–1902. Intended to be part of a Celtic trilogy rivalling the Germanic trilogies by Richard Wagner, Albéniz was only able to finish the first part. This article studies the different Spanish translations of the original English text and the shortcomings—or improvements—that they underwent as the lyrics were being set to music.
