Chapter 4, "Hesitant Step, Counter-Sublime : Bello and Heredia, 1823-1832" follows up with the dialogue between Bello and Heredia and presents Heredia as a poet who at first asserts selfexpression rather than national identity but who later, in conversation with Bellos writings, proclaims national history, while accepting the trauma of the past. Chapter 5, "Taking Root, EcheverrÃ-a and Gómez de Avellaneda, Midcentury," examines an alternative route to modernity. It explores EcheverrÃ-ás confrontation with the modern predicament of writing and his affiliation with the future in the name of progress. The ultimate inability to defend the integrity of the poetic projecr leads to the strong irony of Echeverria's "La cautiva." Though this irony is softened in the works by Gómez de Avellaneda, she is, according to Bush, the first great, unequivocally modern poet in Spanish American letters, for in her writing "love" becomes a figure of self-destruction and desire turns inro an internally divisive, destabilizing force. The book ends with an additional chapter that studies Juan Maria Gutierrez's Pan American poetic anthology as exemplary of the "internal commerce" of Spanish American literature that undergirds the emergence of the historical consciousness that makes the poetic enterprise studied so "modern." Andrew Bush has produced a study for scholars that is masterly, imaginative, and, on occasion , a bit ponderous, especially when compared to Paz's dramatic, poetic, and endiralling presentation . It is, however, at the end of the day, more than worth any effort the reader may exert. It deserves to become, beyond a doubt, required reading in any graduate course on this period. In addition , since its greatest strength is in its detailed and insightful readings of specific poems, a strength that cannot adequately be captured in the confines of a book review, it is also certain to become a vade mecum of all those who desire to understand in a profound and penetrating manner Spanish American poetry of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
