Information for Contributors

It is the journal’s policy that each submitted manuscript be reviewed by three persons qualified to judge its merits. Criteria of particular importance are originality, scholarly significance, clarity, and theoretical and methodological soundness. A manuscript should stand alone in terms of problem delineation, review of prior relevant research, description or presentation of data (including adequate illustrations), interpretation, and literature citation.

Manuscripts for consideration should be submitted electronically to the Editorial Office. All manuscripts should be saved in MS Word (.doc, .docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf), and doublespaced throughout, including references, tables, and endnotes. Endnotes, if used at all, should be kept to an absolute minimum; do not use footnotes. Label electronic files as “Author Last Name_Manuscript.”

References to literature should be indicated throughout the text with page numbers included (American Anthropologist style), e.g., “(Smith 1959:24–28)” or “according to Smith (1959:24–28), the animals . . .” All references cited in the text (and only those references) will be included in the bibliography. In the bibliography, use complete names of authors rather than initials whenever possible. Illustrations should be sized to fit the journal’s page or column width and length and should be sent as separate files labeled as “Author Last Name_Figure 1.” All photographs (minimum 300 dpi) should be submitted electronically in .jpeg, .tiff, or .psd. If the file is larger than 10 MB, contact the Editor prior to submission for additional instructions. Line drawn figures may be submitted in Adobe Illustrator (.ai), .tiff, .svg, .jpeg, or .psd formats. All raster-based files should be a minimum of 600 dpi. Figure captions should be listed in a separate Word document and not embedded in the figures themselves. Label electronic files as “Author Last Name_Figure Captions.”

The journal’s Style Sheet is published in Volume 50, Number 1, 2013. Contributors are also strongly urged to consult the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style before submitting a final manuscript. The Style Sheet and illustration guidelines can be found on the journal’s website: http://uwpress.wisc.edu/journals/journals/aa_contributors.html
