News of the Appalachian Literary Arts For updates and expanded listings, please see our website at www.berea.edu/ApCenter/AppHeritage.html Silas House's A Parchment ofLeaves and Ron Rash's One Foot in Eden were nominated for the William Sayoran International Prize for Literature. The two are among fifteen finalists out of over sixhundred nominees from all over the world. At their annual conference held at Cumberland College on July 12, 2003, the Appalachian Writers Association named George Brosi, editor of Appalachian Heritage, the recipient of its "Outstanding Contribution to Appalachian Literature" award. The Association's "Appalachian Book of the Year" award was a tie between two books: Jeff Daniel Marion's Ebbing and Flowing Spring—New and Selected Poems and Prose, 1976-2001 and Ron Rash's One Foot in Eden. Jane Hicks won the poetry contest and Rebecca Bailey and Natalie Lloyd the fiction contests. Judy Lee Green was the winner in non-fiction. See www.etsu.edu/english/judaculla/ for the other winners. Kate Long's series of interviews with West Virginia authors which aired on National Public Radio locally won the 2003 Gabriel Award in the Entertainment Arts/Local Release Category from the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts for Professionals.
